Damn, but it's windy here

The wind has certainly raged today. If I didn't know what the old Bob Dylan line 'the wind howled like a hammer' meant before, I sure do now. Under the impact of some of the harder gusts the camper would certainly rock. One of my two panels gives an annoying moan to the wind, and the mesquite bush waggles and makes a scratching noise against the saguaro. Yeah, there's a cataphony of noise out here, alright. The skies are a little murky because of all the damned dust blowing about, cutting down on my solar input. It's a rough life, y'know?

Why are you there?

Well, we all have to be somewhere, and, as places go, this is pretty good. Sometimes the weather is a little irksome, but I can deal with that much better than crowds of people.

What do you do with your time?
on Dec 11, 2003
Well, lemme think a moment...
I usually get up around 0700, let the cat out (after checking for coyotes), have some cowboy coffee and breakfast, then go for a walk. I have a little GPS unit, so I generally do 3 miles or so in an hour. Hell, that's good enough. In the afternoon I either sit around and play with my laptop (anything from Kyodai to Morrowind), read, or just sloth in the sun. I usually go into town once a week to take on water, dump my blackwater (some guys gopher hole it, but I don't) and get a few things at the store. Occasionally (maybe once a month) I'll wander into one of the taverns and have a couple of beers. That's the way my days generally goes. No worries, no hurries. How's your days?

They are OK. I live in a big city and punch a clock, but my days are mostly self-determined (within the confines of work). In the next few years I plan to buy some remote acreage and build my own house. I am considering stawbale, cob, and earthship, in conjunction with whatever else the land might provide. Then I will effectively retire.

I used to read a lot about underground houses and houses made of strawbales or rammed earth. Subscribed to Mother Earth news for a few years and all that. I still believe that it's the way to go, but I need to be mobile. I wish you much luck, amigo, in finding a little chunk of heaven somewhere and building your dream house. For energy and appliance needs, check out realgoods.com (get their sources catalog. it's damned good) and backwoodssolar.com. Yeah, I punched the clock for 20+ years until I decided enough was enough and got the hell outta Dodge.
